Ely Chinoy was born on September 5, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey to Sam and Bella Chinoy. He received his B.A. from the University of Newark (now Rutgers University) in 1942 summa cum laude. In the years following he held teaching positions at the Newark College of Engineering, Washington Square College of New York University and at the University of Toronto where he held the 1946 - 1947 Social Science Research Council Fellowship.
